Visibility Sensor

VS2k Visibility Sensor

Compact, forward-scatter visibility measurement up to 2 km — reliable present weather detection for road and rail safety and meteorological observation networks.

Overview

VS2k Visibility Sensor

The VS2k is a compact forward-scatter visibility and present weather sensor designed for continuous, unattended operation in demanding outdoor environments. Measuring meteorological optical range (MOR) up to 2 km with ±10% accuracy, it delivers the reliable visibility data that aviation, transportation and meteorological networks depend on.
Key Benefits
  • Compact design — easy to integrate into existing AWS installations
  • Forward-scatter optical technology for accurate MOR measurement
  • Detects precipitation type — rain, drizzle, snow and fog
  • UMB interface for direct integration with Lufft sensor networks
  • Heated optics for reliable measurement in icing conditions
  • Low maintenance — no moving parts and self-cleaning optics
Visibility Measurement Range

Measures meteorological optical range (MOR) from near-zero up to 2,000 m with ±10% accuracy across the full range.

What the VS2k Detects

Beyond a simple visibility number, the VS2k classifies current precipitation type — providing the present weather codes required for METAR reporting and automated alerting.

Applications

Where the VS2k Is Used

Aviation AWOS

Integrates into Automated Weather Observation Systems at airports and aerodromes to provide continuous visibility and present weather data for METAR generation and flight safety.

Road Weather & RWIS

Deployed at fixed road weather stations to detect reduced visibility events — fog, heavy precipitation and blowing snow — enabling highway variable message sign control and maintenance alerts.

Meteorological Networks

Compact form factor and UMB interface make the VS2k easy to add to existing AWS installations, providing the visibility and present weather parameters required for WMO observation standards.

Marine

Integrates into Weather Station Systems to provide continuous visibility and present weather data for marine safety.

UMB System Integration

The VS2k connects via Lufft's Universal Measurement Bus (UMB) — the same interface used across the Lufft WS800 compact weather sensor family. Multiple Lufft sensors can share a single UMB bus, simplifying wiring at AWS sites.

  • Pairs directly with Lufft WS800 and WS600 compact sensors
  • Compatible with standard RWIS and AWS data acquisition systems
  • Data available via Modbus, SDI-12 and analogue outputs
  • Integrates into geospatial display
Reliable in Extreme Conditions

The VS2k is engineered for continuous outdoor deployment without intervention. Heated optics prevent ice build-up, and the IP66 housing protects internal electronics in driving rain and snow conditions.

  • Heated optical head prevents ice accumulation
  • IP66 weatherproof housing
  • Operates from -40°C to +60°C
  • No moving parts — long-term low-maintenance operation
